This is Shoo, the glamorous, sulking cat who was picked from the audience at random to model a cat hat. Also, her sister kept knocking it off when it was on her.
I based the pattern off of a newborn hat, and kept trying it on each round. It's simple, so I'm sharing the pattern.
I used a 4mm hook and DK weight yarn, "dancing baby" from Ice Yarns. Thank you to all the pattern testers, I couldn't have done it without you!

You may wish to use stitch markers.
Stitch count is shown in brackets at the end of each round.
Use a yarn needle to weave in ends.
Instructions in *asterisks* are to be repeated.
Pattern
1) Make a magic ring, chain 3 into the ring, then do 11 dc into the ring. Slip stitch to top of chain 3. The chain 3 counts as a dc throughout. As an alternative to the magic ring you can chain 4 and slip stitch to make a circle, chain 3 then do 11 dc into the circle Slip stitch into top of chain 3. (12)
2) Chain 3, dc into same space as beginning chain 3, 2 dc into each stitch, slip stitch to top of chain 3. (24)
3) Chain 3, *2 dc in next stitch, dc* 3 times, 2 dc in next stitch. Chain 7, skip 4 dc, make 2 dc, dc in next stitch, *2 dc in next stitch, dc* 2 times. Chain 7, skip 4 dc, dc in next stitch, slip stitch to top of chain 3. (38)
4) Chain 3, 1 dc in each stitch, including 1 dc in each of chains from the previous row. (38 dc)
5) Chain 3, dc in the next 3 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, *dc in next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch* repeat 6 times, 3 dc, slip stitch into top of chain 3. (45 dc)
6) Chain 3, dc in each stitch, slip stitch to top of chain 3. (45 dc)
7) First ear flap. Chain 1, turn, sc into next 2 stitches, chain 2 (doesn’t count as a dc this time), dc into next 10 stitches, chain 2 (counts as a dc), turn, dc into first stitch (don't skip a stitch as per normal dc rows), dc into the next 8 stitches. (10)
*Chain 2 (counts as a dc), turn, dc into first stitch (don't skip a stitch as per normal dc rows), dc into the next 8 stitches. (10)* 2 more times. This gives you 4 rows of dc in total.
Chain 1, turn, sc into each stitch to the end of the row, then continue to sc down the side of the ear flap until you get back to the bottom where it joins row 6. Sc into the next 10 stitches.
8) Second ear flap. Chain 2 (doesn’t count as a dc this time), dc into next 10 stitches, chain 2 (counts as a dc), turn, dc into first stitch (don't skip a stitch as per normal dc rows), dc into the next 8 stitches. (10)
*Chain 2 (counts as a dc), turn, dc into first stitch (don't skip a stitch as per normal dc rows), dc into the next 8 stitches. (10)* 2 more times. This gives you 4 rows of dc in total.
Chain 1, turn, sc into each stitch to the end of the row, then continue to sc down the side of the ear flap until you get back to the bottom where it joins row 6. Sc to the beginning of the round, join with a slip stitch to the first sc.
9) Chain 1, sc in each stitch all around. When you get to the ear flaps, work up the side, then continue to sc in each stitch. Join with a slip stitch to first sc, fasten off and weave in ends. (No final stitch count as it depends on how many you do down the side of the ear flaps, this can be affected by how tight you crochet)
Embellishments (optional)
I cut 6 strands of yarn in equal lengths, split them into 2 groups of 3, folded 1 group of 3 in half then used the crochet hook to pull the strands through the last row of sc in the ear flap about half way, then separated the strands into groups of 2 and plaited/braided them. A pompom or plait/braid coming from the start of the hat would look cute too!
